Little People Big Voices programme
Little People Big Voices is MGC’s Early Years programme for child-care settings. There are over 12 childcare facilities currently participating on the programme for the academic year 2015-2016. The programme focuses on developing beat, rhythm, melody and movement and introduces the child to music through the means of play within their childcare setting. This programme is for children from 0-5 years and the MGC musicians work in partnership with the childcare workers on a weekly basis for 30 minutes.
Encore Primary Schools programme
Encore is MGC’s primary school programme which offers a wide range of instrumental tuition to schools across Co. Carlow. There are over 30 primary schools participating on the Encore programme. Students have been given the opportunity to learn strings, traditional Irish, ukulele, voice and brass all facilitated by an MGC musician once a week during their class time for 45 minutes. MGC offers schools the chance to develop the tradition of music within the school by awarding the title of ‘Music Rich’ to those schools who have committed to developing a given musical genre in their school over a long period of time.
Bravo Secondary Schools programme
The Bravo programme is mainly focused on developing Transition Year students and offering junior students the chance to engage with vocal and instrumental tuition after school. The programme has also focused on composition in the past and certain schools have worked alongside ‘composers in residence’ to write new vocal and instrumental music as part of their Music Generation Carlow module within the school. The Bravo programme has been a great success since it started in 2013 and it is hoped it will continue to develop steadily over the coming years.
MGC offers subsidised instrumental tuition to young people in three vibrant music hubs throughout the county: Hacketstown, Carlow Town and Borris. Lessons on offer include traditional instruments such as fiddle, flute, whistle, button accordion, concertina, banjo, mandolin, pipes as well as guitar, ukulele, cello and brass. The hubs initiative has given access to high quality, affordable tuition across the county and has been one of the success stories of MGC to date. As part of the Hubs, MGC works in partnership with Carlow Regional Youth Services to facilitate 3 after-school vocal projects and a vibrant Rock School which takes place at The Vault in Carlow town each week.
Piano Duet Club
The Piano Duet Club is another partnership project with Carlow College of Music and was established in 2014 to offer talented piano players to develop technique and accompaniment skills with an MGC musician. The students meet fortnightly to perform piano duets.
The Traditional Orchestra has a membership of over 40 young musicians who all attend outside their traditional music lessons to play as an orchestral ensemble. The orchestra is also open to students not attending lessons in our 3 MGC hubs. The students learn to read traditional music and perform in parts, just like a regular orchestra. The concept of a traditional orchestra is quite new and the MGC Traditional Orchestra is conducted and directed by Mr. Ciaran Somers. The students develop their technique, literacy and performance style in a friendly atmosphere on a monthly basis in a neutral Carlow venue. There are regular performance opportunities throughout the year for the orchestra, accompanied by their MGC musicians.
