Mike first picked up drumsticks at the age of five. Although he studied several instruments his love for percussion endured and drum kit became his primary instrument
After a successful audition to attend the D.I.T college of music in Dublin He began a five year tutelage under the late and great Monica Bonnie, where he studied the Trinity Guildhall Syllabus in Drum kit and Percussion achieving his Grade 8.
He started teaching privately during his final years in D.I.T as he earned a degree in Social Care, where he worked in residential care with adults with physical or intellectual disabilities. In late 2011 Mike decided to turn his passion into his profession and opened a music school in Carlow town called The Music Workshop where he teaches Drum kit and percussion along with several other music teachers providing lessons in Piano, Violin, Guitar, Saxophone and vocal coaching.
After almost 25 years playing the Drums and 15 years teaching Mike stands by his belief that we are all still developing as musician’s and when you stop learning you are finished as an artist and a tutor. Mike teaches the Trinity Guildhall syllabus in The Music Workshop where his students have the option to sit grade exams annually.
