Music Generation Carlow is a new music education service for County Carlow. It is part of Music Generation Ireland – a national music education programme developed by Music Network and funded by multi-million euro donations from U2 and The Ireland Funds.
This amazing project brings matched funding from Music Generation direct to Carlow, doubling the value of every euro raised here for Carlow MEP’s Go Music! programme. Over the next three years and based on reaching local funding targets, Carlow MEP’s Go Music! programme will, with the support of Music Generation; bring over €1.1million of music performance education activities and events for 0-18 years olds throughout the county. The Go Music! programme was developed by local musicians and music teachers, with foundation local funding commitment from County Carlow VEC and Carlow Local Authorities, and development support from many other local agencies. The programme is managed locally by Co. Carlow Music Education Partnership (MEP). This interagency group includes, Co Carlow V.E.C and Carlow County Council Arts Office.
We had been looking for some time for a way to get involved in an initiative in music education in Ireland. After talking to various people in Ireland about what to do, we came to the conclusion that the Music Network scheme is really well thought out and that we, in partnership with the Ireland Funds, should just get behind it. -The Edge
Carlow MEP will, through the implementation of a progressive music education programme called Go Music! in partnership with schools and community organisations, progressively provide new opportunities as well as supporting the development and expansion of existing groups. Go Music! will develop as a regional network throughout Carlow providing music education, teacher curriculum development, fundraising, and performance opportunities. Ultimately Carlow MEP plans to develop Go Music! by implementing its own Curriculum Repertoire resource programme which will ensure artistic integrity and direction. This will inspire and enable children and young people from all backgrounds and regions of County Carlow to learn to play musical instruments, sing, make music with others and have opportunities to progress to the next level of excellence. This will include establishing performance opportunities locally, regionally and nationally.
Co Carlow Music Education Partnership is guided by the following core values: access, quality, partnerships, diversity, creativity and sustainability.
“The Ireland Funds are proud to support Music Generation – a flagship initiative for music education in Ireland. Our participation represents the global Irish family’s belief in Ireland’s children and young people and our commitment to supporting Irish culture. Through our Promising Ireland Campaign, we have pledged to raise $140 million by the end of 2013 on behalf of Irish charities and I am delighted that our target to raise €2million for Music Generation is firmly on track. We believe that Music Generation will make a huge contribution to music education in Ireland.”
“The work of Music Generation is fundamental to the realisation of Music Network’s vision for music in Ireland, in which everyone in the country has access to musical activity of the highest quality, regardless of circumstance or location. We look forward to Music Generation achieving, over time, its full potential to transform music education throughout the country and to positively impact on the long-term development of music in Ireland.”
“The Department of Education and Skills welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with the donors, Music Network, Music Generation and the wider music education sector.
Music education plays an important role in all aspects of children’s development and this initiative will undoubtedly enrich the lives of thousands of children and their communities. Government is committed to continuing to develop and sustain Music Education Partnerships with Exchequer funding in future years, when the Music Generation donations cease.”
